Take Your Team to a “Best in the World” Vision

The metaphor that I use for TRUE Leadership is a ladder. The ladder represents TRUE Leadership in action in an organization, but the ladder (TRUE Leadership) is not the destination in itself. Ultimately, TRUE Leadership is a means to accomplish goals that lead an organization to its vision.

We begin our discussion of TRUE Leadership by emphasizing the importance of determining the vision for your organization. Not just any vision will do!

Every great organization has figured out how they can be the “Best in the World” in what they do and then incorporating that into their vision. In the book, Good to Great, this was defined as the “hedgehog” concept. Great companies did not try to do everything well, they just figured out how to do one thing better than anyone else. In doing so, they sometimes even had to eliminate business units that took them away from their core focus.

To be a TRUE leader you must focus your team in a direction where they can be the “Best in the World”. You begin to do this by creating a “Best in the World” culture in your organization. The “Best in the World” culture is determined by the vision, values and goals of the organization. Every leader must take the time to create a clear and compelling vision, a set of strong organizational values and the goals necessary to make sure that the organization is moving toward the vision!

Your “Best in the World” vision statement defines a realistic, credible, attractive future for your organization. It is a carefully formulated statement of who you must be as an organization to be the “Best in the World”.

The right “Best in the World” vision statement is so powerful it can literally jumpstart the future of an organization. If used correctly it can create a laser-like focus and call forth energies, talents, and resources to make great things happen. A great “Best in the World” vision attracts commitment and energizes people by providing a significant challenge worthy of their best fforts.

Your “Best in the World” vision statement will also challenge people who are under performing. It will give them an opportunity to be crystal clear about what is required of them to continue on as part of a “Best in the World” team. They can then either reenergize themselves around the new vision or fall by the wayside.

In summary, you can’t be a leader unless you have a vision and you can’t be an outstanding leader unless you have a “Best in the World” Vision.

Make it an outstanding day,

Tom McCarthy
