Predict Your Future

Roy Williams, the basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, had taken his teams to the Final Four in the past, but he had never won a championship. When his team made it to the championship game again this year, the pressure on Roy and his team intensified. What strategies would he use to prepare his team to win the championship this year?

All leaders know that for teams to accomplish great things you have to set specific targets and then take the appropriate actions to reach the target. But just as important as having a target and taking action is “how do you feel when you think about your target?” Do you “hope” that you can achieve it? Does it seem like something you'll try to do and see what happens? Or is it something that you know has already been accomplished? You may be thinking, “How can I know that something has already been accomplished when it is supposed to happen in the future?” I know it doesn't make much sense to a rational person, but to accomplish extraordinary things you will need the certainty that is created from believing that they have already been accomplished.

Roy Williams employed this strategy with his basketball team. One of the traditions that the winning team takes part in after winning the championship is the cutting down of the basketball nets. Before the Championship game, Coach Williams ended a practice by telling his team he knew they were the National Champions. And because he was certain that his team was the National Champions (even though the game had not been played yet) he wanted to make sure that they knew how to cut down the nets, since they would have to do it after their win in the championship game. The players and coaches ended practice by cutting down the nets. Later they went on to beat a very tough team, the University of Illinois, to win the National Championship!

Use this strategy with your team. Start talking about what you want to have happen in the future as if it has already happened and you and your team will start to see extraordinary things happen!

Make it an outstanding day,
