Articles » Presentation SkillsClimbing the Ladder of Outstanding Presentations
Now you know what a powerful and persuasive presentation is, and about the four levels of presentations—poor, good, excellent, and outstanding. You’ve committed to being one of the top “ten percenters” when it comes to presenting: you want nothing less than outstanding results. Now you’re ready to start the work it will require to become the best of the best! There are four major components of your preparation for delivering an outstanding presentation. The Four Components of Outstanding Presentations 1. Focus on your outcome. 2. Prepare yourself. 3. Communicate with integrity and power. 4. Fire-UP! your audience to achieve your outcome. Four components should be easy to remember, right? But I have found in my trainings that people find these components a lot easier to apply when I put them in the context of a metaphor of how the process of creating and delivering a persuasive presentation works. So here it is: the ladder you and your audience will climb as you deliver outstanding presentations! Why do I use a ladder as a metaphor for creating and delivering oustanding presentations? Many reasons. Almost everyone’s been on a ladder at one time or another. A ladder helps you get from point A to point B. A ladder isn’t the end result but a tool; it isn’t the goal, but the means by which you reach a goal. We often use a ladder when we want to get to something that’s out of reach based on where we are at the moment. And a ladder is a sturdy, clear path that we can take, step by step, to achieve what we want. Each part of the ladder works in terms of the four major components of persuasive presentations. Sitting on top of the ladder is our outcome. If we don’t focus on our outcome while we use the ladder, we won’t know if the ladder is taking us where we want to go. The base of the ladder rests on the foundation of our preparation. If you’ve ever tried to put a ladder on a hill, soft dirt, or any other foundation that was less than firm, you know how difficult it is. When we prepare ourselves, however, the ladder of our presentation is grounded, solid, and steady. The side rails of the ladder define our integrity. This means doing the right thing for your audience and staying true to your values as you communicate. These guide our steps toward our outcome and enable us to communicate with integrity and power. As long as we stay within our values, making the climb is easy. If we attempt to stray outside our values, we find ourselves treading on thin air with no support and no way of reaching our goal. Finally, each of the rungs of the ladder are steps for delivering the content of our presentation and get us to our outcome of persuading the audience to take action. Each of the six steps is represented by one letter of the word, “FIRE-UP!” Just like the rungs of a ladder, each step is an intermediate goal you must achieve on your way to your outcome. If you miss one, you risk falling off the ladder. But if you take each step in turn, reaching your goal will seem natural and almost effortless. Get Step Up Selling!
